#AccordingtoCandace: 11 Rules Everyone Should Follow for Looking Their Best

Although rules are meant to be broken šŸ˜ these are simple guidelines that I follow and recommend on how to look your best.

1) Wear clothes that fit well. Clothes that complement your figure make a difference in your appearance. There are five main body shapes for women: hourglass, apple, pear, triangle, and rectangle {more on this in another post!}. Carefully take time to learn your shape and what items work best for you. Once you learn this, you will be unstoppable.

2) Choose the right undergarments ā€” they matter! I repeat, undergarments MATTER! (yes, I am yelling!) Invest in good bras, panties and shapewear. If you are wearing an ill-fitted bra or we can see panty lines through your trousers or pencil skirt, throw the whole outfit away! Undergarments are vital in helping you look put together and dignified. Itā€™s even been known that undergarments can instantly make you look slimmer. No lie!

3) Find a good tailor and donā€™t be afraid to use them. Whether itā€™s for a dress, a pair of trousers, blouse or jacket, always keep your tailor on standby. I planned to wear a white sequins dress to my motherā€™s homegoing service last year. It fit ok but I felt it was a little too big. So, I took it to my handy tailor and in two days I had a dress that fit like a glove! Listen, a good tailor can save the day. Tip: in most cases, you can find a tailor in your local dry cleaners.

4) Lean into colors. Bright, bold colors can transform your mood and illuminate your appearance. Although I can literally wear all black every day, my other favorite colors to wear are pink, bright yellow, and olive green. Also, donā€™t be afraid to mix colors {color blocking is still a thing!} ā€” it can make for an exciting day.

5) Donā€™t follow the trends. Set them! Trends are a lot of fun and can be exhilarating if youā€™re able to pull them off but remember they are ever-changing. You donā€™t want to waste your money constantly following fads only for them to be a laughingstock in a couple years. Think about when some of us were wearing ultra low-rise jeans with half our booty hanging out!? Yuck.

6) Establish a staple piece(s) for your wardrobe. A staple piece is an article of clothing that is essential to your wardrobe. Like, your go-to item that practically goes with anything. Is it a blazer? A little black dress? A summer duster? (oh, how I love a nice duster!), maybe itā€™s a good pair of jeans? Or a crisp white shirt. There are no limits to the number of staple pieces you can have but remember it must be trusty and must go well with anything. What are your staple pieces that make you feel your best? Wear them! Life is too short to wear clothes that you donā€™t love.

A few of my staple pieces for fall and winter are long, oversized cardigans, brown and black ankle boots and black skinny jeans {I have several pair}. In the summertime, I remain in a committed relationship with my duster because it pairs well with sundresses and blue jeans.

7) Try not to over-accessorize. I know we love our jewelry but over accessorizing can oftentimes give off a messy or dated look. Famous French fashion designer Coco Chanel offered this minimalist-minded mantra many years ago: ā€œBefore you leave the house, look in the mirror and take one thing off.ā€ Make sure that your jewelry does not compete with you or your outfit. You can tell youā€™ve overdone it if peopleā€™s eyes are fixated on your jewelry instead of your face.

8) Mix and match clothes that are already in your closet. Buying an outfit as a set doesnā€™t mean you are confined to wearing it as a set. Mixing items already in your closet helps you to keep your wardrobe fresh and exciting without having to buy anything new. Donā€™t be afraid to dibble and dabble in mixing prints.  Aim to stay in the same color that matches your print that you want to wear. For example: black and white polka dots mixed with black and white stripes. Remember, balance is key.  If one print is big and dominates, wear it with something of a smaller scale, and if one item is super loud, find something more subtle to tone it down.

9) Drop them dollas on some nice shoes! After all, itā€™s one of the first things people look at when you walk into a room. Stylish, quality shoes can totally spruce up a simple outfit.

10) Throw out clothing that no longer fits or has been collecting dust. Try the six-month rule: if you havenā€™t worn the item in over six months, throw it out! For the record, this doesnā€™t apply to garments that you only wear for special events; this applies to everyday clothing. Also, try to make it a habit of purchasing new undergarments every six months.

11) Donā€™t leave the house without confidence! Above all, this is your most attractive armor. And it sets you up for success, which is so, so good.
