New York & Co. Earrings

Back in summer 2019, I’m at work minding my business. In walks one of my colleagues – I’ll call her Kate. Kate has on these earrings that stop me dead in my tracks.

They were gorgeous!

The earrings were dangling, black and high-fashion-ey. I instantly fell in love with them and knew that I had to have them.

So I say, “Omg, Kate! Where did you get those earrings?! I love them!”

“New York & Company,” she says.

“Oh, I need those!” I say.

“Go on their website but hurry because I got them on sale,” she instructs.

“Bet!” I say.

So I head on over to the NY&Co website, pin down those babies, add them to my cart, and cop them immediately.

Yassss!

The earrings arrive a few days later but I hold off on wearing them. They sit in my jewelry box for weeks until I can find the perfect outfit and hairstyle to complement them.

Kate had been wearing her earrings for several weeks so I subconsciously held off on wearing them to work so we wouldn’t be the office twins.

But the day arrived and I couldn’t wait any longer. I had to break those babies out. I wore them to work with a huge smile and a cute outfit.

“Oh, so you got those earrings, huh? You ain’t waste no time!” says Kate dripping with shade.

“Yes, girl! They’re a little heavy on my ears but I love them.”

And that was that. I could tell that Kate wasn’t thrilled about me copping the same earrings as her. Maybe she felt I was stealing her shine.

Which brings me to a question for all my Pearlites: do you mind when someone deliberately imitates your style? Does it annoy you? Do you take it as a compliment?

You know.. the whole, “imitation is the highest form of flattery.” thing. How do you feel about it?

Are you one of those people who likes to keep the stores you frequent a secret? Or do you freely share because you want everyone to shine? Do you share the store but hope they forget to purchase altogether?

I’ve heard people say things like, “It’s the reason they make more than one item in the store, so that multiple people can buy it!”

I’ve also known people to lie and say the item in question was a gift and they have no idea where it came from. You all are awful people, lol.

I’ve been in both positions where I have shared where I purchased an item later to see that person got it, too. It didn’t bother me one bit. I’m glad to have been able to inspire someone else to dress their best!

Here are my general thoughts: we may cop the same item but our style is different therefore we will not wear it the same. I have the confidence to know that we all are unique and our style can never be duplicated.

So what about you? Do you mind someone buying the same thing you have on? Can you hook it up differently? I’d love to hear your take! Sound off in the comments, please!

Fashionably yours,

Candace Thee Stylist 💕

  1. I don’t mind at all! The people who are closest to me already know the majority of the items in my closet are from Eloquii, Lane Bryant and Dillard’s! I will share where I purchased and what to do to not have to pay full price. When you look good, you feel good so I’ll always share 😊

  2. I’m a firm believer that people should buy and wear whatever they want! I always ask people where they buy this or that when I like their style. So far, they always seem happy to share. People sometimes ask me and I gladly share. (Chances are it came from TJMAXX, Marshall’s, Target, H&M, or a thrift store). I have often given away items if it seems like the person really loves it. I have to admit that when I’m at a Gala or special event it never fails that someone will have the same dress as me ( I normally buy formal wear from Macy’s) I feel a little uncomfortable not because I care, but I always wonder if the other person is looking at me like (REALLY)🤷🏾‍♀️🤣
